The trailer can be used both in winter and summer. In our previous blog post we also wrote about what to check on your trailer before winter arrives. But we also have some good advice for those who only use their trailer in nice weather. In this blog post we want to help you in how to store your trailer when winter arrives.
Do you use your trailer in winter?
With the onset of cold weather you will not be transporting your boat, motorboat, motorcycle or quad as you will have to wait a few more months for the next season. Horse trailers are also used less often. If you are not doing renovation work or you are not moving, you probably will not need a trailer once the frosty weather arrives. What could be the exception? For example, if you are a fan of winter sports and want to transport your snowmobile to the mountains, you had better prepare your trailer for winter use. In all other cases, store your trailer properly. How?
3 + 1 tips for winter storage of the trailer
1. Clean it thoroughly.
The first and most important thing is to clean the the trailer inside and outside, but do not forget about drying it either. Do not cover it with anything until it is completely dry inside and outside.
2. Take sensitive components indoors.
Sensitive parts that can be easily removed should be taken into the garage so they are not exposed to moisture and freezing temperature.
3. Store it in the garage or cover it.
Your trailer will have a long life if stored under cover. The safest is to push it into your garage so it can pull through the winter. In the case of a covered trailer, leave the door slightly open to ensure good ventilation to prevent mould.
But if you do not have the option or space to store it in the garage, you need to choose another alternative. That’s no other than covering it with tarpaulin. It is important to take everything out of it before covering it and the trailer should be clean and dry. Be sure that the tarpaulin protects it from the rain and snow, but allows air to pass through. If a hermetically sealed, non-breathable material is chosen, moisture can be trapped under the tarpaulin, which can cause fungal growth and mould.
+ 1 tip: Use a wheel chock for safe securing.
With a wheel chock you can safely secure your trailer during the winter months so it will not move from its place. A practical bracket for the wheel choke which can be mounted on the side wall of the trailer is also available for purchase. So in spring you just have to snap it in the bracket and you can be on your way.
Take care of your trailer.
Naturally, everyone wants their trailer to stay intact and functional for as long as possible, which is why you need to pay close attention to winter storage. In addition, the trailer must also be inspected by the authorities, which is why it is very important to keep it in good condition. Of course, before the spring season you definitely need to do a check up on you trailer if you want to drive safely, but this is still in the future.
