There are many urban legends about the maintenance of trailers. Of course, not all are true, so now we will clear things up. What is permitted and what is not to prevent the premature ageing and wear of the trailer and its components? We are looking for the answer to this in our current blog post.
Protection of the trailer chassis and axle against rust
Urban legend: The bottom of the trailer and the axle should be treated thoroughly with used oil and before the oil dries it has to be driven on a dusty road. The duo of oil and dust form a perfect coating that protects against the corrosive effects of rain, mud, snow and ice. The chassis and axle of the trailer will not rust.
True or not? NOT TRUE. After a while the used oil becomes acidic on the plates and metal surfaces and rust appears in spots. Therefore, it does not protect against corrosion.

Storing the trailer
Urban legend: Outdoor storage of the trailer is no problem in spring, summer or rainless weather.
True or not? NOT TRUE. Sunlight may not do much damage to the structure of the trailer, but it does all the more to the tyre. Thus, the trailer should not be stored outdoors for extended periods of time even during rain-free weather. If you do not have a garage, store it under a roof or cover it. After all, the sun damages, dries out the tyre and cracks can appear on it which in turn can result in the detachment of the entire tread in the case of older tyres. In addition, it is important to mention that profile and the tread depth that is relevant to the condition of the tyre. Do not use tyres that are older than 10 years on your trailer.
What is the solution? Always store your trailer indoors: in a garage, under a roof or cover it to protect it from the rain and the rays of the sun. Always check the condition of the tyres before departing. If they are worn out replace them with new ones.
Bulbs and connection
Urban legend: for new and older lights if the connection between the luminaire and the bulb is not good, use contact cleaner spray.
True or not? TRUE. If you use contact cleaner spray on the contact surface of the bulb, it will keep moisture away, which will make the connection better. You can even extend its service life with it. Remember to check if the lights properly work on the trailer before each departure.
