Checking the trailer coupling head for wear

In our previous articles we introduced an important element of the primary connection between the trailer and the towing vehicle, our range of coupling heads and our latest developments. We cleared up a common misconception that the coupling head and the drawbar are the same. We provided help on how you can check the tow-ball for wear. In this post aim to help you identify coupling head wear.

How to use the coupling head

Autóflex-KNOTT coupling heads have a clear indication when they become worn. The best way to understand this is to go through the process of using the coupling head. An experienced trailer user often performs these operations, but an important part of trailer maintenance is looking carefully at the coupling head to identify a problem in time. In addition, there is an important step that probably fewer people carry out during the inspection.

Connecting the coupling head to the tow-ball

  1. Push the button at the bottom of the coupling head until it stops. In the picture it is marked with a blue arrow.
  2. Lifting the end of the arm, tilt it forward until it stops. In this position, the lever stays in place.
  3. Fit the housing of the coupling head over the tow-ball, then press the housing firmly onto the tow-ball. The connection is indicated by a click. Caution! Do not touch the coupling head during this procedure, just hold the trailer drawbar, as the coupling head arm will snap down.

Checking for wear on the coupling head

Autóflex-KNOTT coupling heads have a wear indicator.

Check which area the pin on the side of the housing of the coupling head lands in. “-” (red): the tow-ball or the coupling head is worn, the connection is correctly established. “+” (green): the connection is correctly established. “x” (red): the connection was not properly established the connection is incorrect.

Of course, it is also important to visually inspect both the condition of the coupling head and the condition of the tow-ball. The coupling head must fit snugly on the tow-ball. If, when closed, there is a gap between the mating surfaces, further investigation is required and one of the components should be replaced.

You also need to look at the wear on the tow-ball, and the part of the coupling head in contact with the tow-ball. So an important step is to check the underside of the coupling head regularly. The moving part that connects to the tow-ball is called the lip of the coupling head. The underside of the lip of the coupling head may become sharp with wear. If you notice this, the coupling head is definitely worn. It is better to be careful when checking the lip of the coupling head as a razor-sharp lip can cut your finger. At this level of wear, the wear indicator on the coupling head also clearly indicates wear.
