The colder seasons mean more challenges for anyone setting off, and the trailer driver is no exception either. However, it is important to bear in mind that although there are unavoidable circumstances beyond our control (weather, time of day, traffic, etc.), we can do a lot to stay safe on the road. Here are the most important things to do.
Do you know how fast you can go with a trailer?
Choosing the right driving speed for the road conditions is important in order to minimise the chances of sliding on the road. So, how fast can you go? No matter what kind of trailer you are driving, the speed limits for you are the same as for lorries. So, 80 km/h on motorways, 70 km/h on semi-motorways and on open roads and 50 km/h inside built-up areas. Of course, it is worth reducing this in snowy, wet or icy conditions as it is easier to maintain grip at lower speeds and more likely to adjust in the event of a skid.
Do not overload your trailer
Strict rules apply to the load capacity of trailers and semi-trailers. Maximum permissible total weight: the weight of the car or the trailer including the maximum load. This information is also found in your registration card, so it’s not worth playing tricks, because if you get caught at an inspection, you could end up with a nasty fine. Light trailers have a maximum permissible weight of less than 750 kg, while heavy trailers have a maximum permissible weight of over 750 kg. However, it is not worth maximising this limit if traffic conditions are limited. With a lighter tow, it will be much easier to drive according to weather and road conditions.
Good timing is important
Hungarian winters are now much milder than they used to be a decade or two ago. With a bit of luck, you can easily schedule your transport for a day when the temperature is already milder, but even then, it still matters what time of day you travel. If you can, avoid early morning or evening travel, and don’t set off in the coldest hours. During the day, the main routes are skid-free, so you can do your work safely.
Choose busier roads with your trailer
Use the main roads, as they are more frequently maintained and made skid resistant and the higher traffic volumes mean that precipitation is cleared more quickly. Moreover, if you have any problems, you don’t have to wait for hours for help.
How to store your towing equipment
The difficulties of winter driving can be avoided by storing trailers and semi-trailers properly when not in use, thus preserving the physical condition of the towed equipment. Believe us, a well-maintained trailer will reward you for your care and will be there to help you on difficult terrain.
